Until the mid-20th century, ukuleles were traditionally strung with gut strings — a material used for thousands of years that combines excellent attack response with brilliant tonal character. This distinctive sound differs greatly from that of modern nylon strings and remained an important tonal reference for luthiers, composers, and performers alike.

A key objective of Aquila’s research was therefore to develop a new synthetic material that recreates the acoustic characteristics of natural gut while eliminating its common disadvantages such as high cost, limited lifespan, and sensitivity to climate changes.

Nylgut® was developed precisely for this purpose. It allows players to rediscover the warm, rich, and responsive sound associated with the great ukulele masters of the 19th and 20th centuries while offering even greater tuning stability than traditional gut or standard nylon strings.
