Until the mid-20th century, ukuleles were traditionally strung exclusively with gut strings. This material, used for thousands of years, combines excellent attack response with a bright and lively tonal character — very different from modern nylon strings. The characteristic sound of gut remained an important tonal reference for luthiers, composers, and performers for decades.

Aquila’s research focused on developing a synthetic material capable of reproducing the acoustic properties of natural gut while eliminating its common disadvantages such as high cost, limited durability, and instability caused by climate and temperature changes.

Nylgut® was created precisely for this purpose. It allows players to rediscover the warm and expressive sound associated with classic ukuleles while offering even greater tuning stability than traditional gut or standard nylon strings.
