The String Muter dampens harmonics and unwanted string vibration, which can be very annoying, especially with modern playing techniques like tapping. It is simply stretched above the nut and then pulled over the strings as needed. Some people have a particularly resonant acoustic guitar hanging on the living room wall, which immediately resonates with every loudly spoken word.
